The future of Kentucky’s business innovation just got a major boost. The Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs (GSE) and the University of Kentucky’s Gatton College of Business and Economics have officially extended their partnership for three more years — ensuring the “Summer Startup” program remains on UK’s campus through 2027.
The move comes after the program’s highly successful debut at the university in 2024, which energized both the academic and business communities. Building on that momentum, the 2025 edition is set to become the largest in GSE history, welcoming 160 of Kentucky’s most promising high school innovators from June 22 to July 13.
A Launchpad for Young Entrepreneurs
Over three immersive weeks, students will live, learn, and create on campus while developing innovative business ideas. From pitching to prototyping, participants will gain real-world experience in entrepreneurship — all while building vital leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.
Governor Andy Beshear praised the initiative as a model for youth development in the Commonwealth.
“Kentucky students deserve opportunities that prepare them for a thriving future,” Beshear said. “Thanks to this partnership, we’re equipping young minds with the tools they need to lead, innovate, and inspire.”
A Campus Built for Innovation
Gatton College has become more than a host — it’s a collaborator deeply committed to shaping Kentucky’s entrepreneurial landscape. The college provides GSE students with access to modern classrooms, collaborative innovation labs, mentorship from faculty and alumni, and a vibrant community that fosters ambition.
“This partnership perfectly complements our mission to cultivate future business leaders,” said Simon Sheather, dean of the Gatton College. “We’re excited to see what these students will build next — and proud to play a role in their journey.”

Beyond the Classroom: A Growing Ecosystem
Founded in 2013, GSE has impacted over 1,000 high school students from across Kentucky, preparing them not only for entrepreneurship but for leadership in any industry. The extended collaboration with UK Gatton College provides continuity and stability for the program, which is entirely free for accepted students thanks to backing from the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet, the Cabinet for Economic Development, and a wide range of private and public supporters.
In addition to the Summer Startup program, GSE’s year-round programming includes the Collegiate Pitch Competition — the largest of its kind in the state — where college entrepreneurs compete for funding to bring their ideas to life.
“The enthusiasm and ingenuity we saw last summer were unmatched,” said GSE President and CEO Anne Jewell. “UK Gatton is more than a venue — it’s a vibrant hub of possibility. We’re excited to grow our impact and continue empowering the next wave of Kentucky entrepreneurs.”
More Than a Summer Camp — It’s a Movement
With entrepreneurial education often missing from traditional high school curricula, GSE fills a critical gap. The program identifies talent early, then nurtures it with mentorship, networking, and hands-on experiences.
And the benefits extend far beyond high school. Many alumni have gone on to win scholarships, launch startups, and pursue degrees in business, engineering, and beyond.
