A new state-of-the-art school in Ceredigion has been recognised as the most environmentally sustainable educational facility in the UK, thanks to its exceptional performance in a globally respected green building assessment.
Ysgol Dyffryn Aeron, a £16.3 million project developed through a partnership between Ceredigion County Council and Wynne Construction, achieved an impressive BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating of 93.69% under the 2018 Education Scheme — earning it “Outstanding” status. This rating places the school among the very top tier of sustainable educational buildings, making it only the second in Wales to achieve this elite standard.
Opened in March 2025, the new school brings together three former primary schools into one modern facility. It provides places for up to 210 pupils, with dedicated resources for additional learning needs, early years education, and Welsh-medium instruction.

Councillor Wyn Thomas, cabinet member for schools and lifelong learning, praised the milestone, stating:
“Ysgol Dyffryn Aeron is a prime example of how collaboration can deliver not only a modern educational setting but one that leads the way in sustainability. We’re proud that our commitment to green building has been recognised with such an outstanding BREEAM rating.”
BREEAM assessments are internationally recognised for measuring the environmental and sustainability performance of buildings. The evaluation covers areas such as energy and water efficiency, carbon emissions, pollution control, waste reduction, health and wellbeing features, innovation, and transport strategies.
Wynne Construction’s director, Richard Wynne, noted the importance of this achievement:
“Scoring over 85% is required for an ‘Outstanding’ grade — reaching nearly 94% is a phenomenal result. This would not have been possible without the close collaboration between our team, the council, and our supply partners.”
As the highest-scoring education building in the UK under the 2018 BREEAM Education Scheme, Ysgol Dyffryn Aeron sets a new benchmark for future school developments, combining environmental responsibility with cutting-edge educational infrastructure.
