In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the Youth Sport Trust is ramping up efforts to get young people moving by organizing what it hopes will be the UK’s biggest-ever Sports Day on 21 June. The event is part of the National School Sports Week (NSSW), run in partnership with Sports Direct and Under Armour, and aims to rally schools, families, and communities around a shared goal: helping children achieve the recommended daily amount of physical activity.
The campaign is built around a simple message — make movement a regular part of every child’s day. While the UK Chief Medical Officers advise that children should engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily (or 20 minutes for those with disabilities or special educational needs), Sport England data reveals that less than half of young people currently hit that target.
To help bridge the gap, this year’s NSSW is promoting an “Always Active” approach. The concept encourages schools to incorporate physical movement beyond traditional PE classes, integrating activity throughout the entire school day.

A standout feature of the 2025 campaign is the new Always Active Uniforms initiative. This forward-thinking strategy is aimed at removing clothing as a barrier to movement by encouraging schools to adopt more flexible, sports-appropriate attire.
Support for the idea is strong. According to a recent YouGov survey, 74% of parents and 67% of teachers back the shift toward more movement-friendly school uniforms. Schools that have already tested the idea, such as Dame Dorothy Primary School in Sunderland, have reported a noticeable uptick in students’ willingness to engage in physical activity.
The Youth Sport Trust hopes that by combining inclusive policies like uniform reform with a national celebration of sport, they can build long-term habits and ensure physical activity becomes an embedded part of every child’s education.
